CARPC serves as a leader and convenor in efforts to promote a healthy and equitable regional tree canopy. Trees are deeply rooted in the 2050 Regional Development Framework goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and fostering community resilience to climate change. Among many other benefits, a healthy tree canopy:

  • Sequesters CO2, offsetting about 10-15% of annual U.S. emissions (USDA).
  • Intercepts precipitation, reducing stormwater runoff and mitigating flooding.
  • Decreases the urban heat island effect through the process of transpiration and by providing shade.

Our Work

  • Planting trees with schools, community centers, and nonprofits.
  • Providing technical support for tree inventory and tree planting projects.
  • Participating in the Dane County Tree Board and the Tree Canopy Collaborative to achieve regional canopy goals.
  • Mapping heritage oaks (200+ year old trees) and distribute heritage oak seedlings.
  • Providing maps and data of historical and current tree canopy.
