Climate Resilience

In response to historic flooding in the fall of 2018, the Capital Area RPC began exploring options for a coordinated, inter-municipal approach to address flooding. This led to the completion of our first climate resilience initiative, the Black Earth Creek Watershed Green Infrastructure Plan, in 2022.

Since then, we have incorporated a goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing climate and flood resilience into our 2050 Regional Development Framework. CARPC is also proud to be a founding member of the Midwest Climate Collaborative.

One way we work toward regional climate goals is by leading several tree canopy initiatives in partnership with groups like the Tree Canopy Collaborative, the Dane County Tree Board, the State Cartographer’s Office, and multiple local environmental organizations. We are also working to complete a road-stream crossing inventory for rural Dane County to help towns prioritize bridge and culvert replacement.
