Our regional news map is back after a long hiatus over the winter! We have changed how it looks as well as where we gather the information from and how detailed that information is. Changes to the map will be ongoing over the next few months as we work to improve how we gather statistics from local sources.
Why the Changes?
Much of our work recently has been devoted to drafting the 2050 Regional Development Framework. The building blocks of that document include a series of goals, objectives, and strategies developed in concert with local communities and guided by local comprehensive plans.
We need data to track progress towards those elements of the Framework. Our goal is to have general statistics describing all structures with either dwelling units or employment. This includes existing, developing, and future structures. This large undertaking will inform not only the Regional Development Framework, but also other planning efforts such as the Greater Madison MPO’s regional transportation plan, CARPC’s water quality planning, etc.
Part of our challenge is that the region has been without a comprehensive system to track and anticipate new development to this point. There is a lot going on behind the scenes; not all the information we are collecting is reflected in the map itself.
I Work for Community X and I Have Additional Information!
If you notice inaccurate information or have additional information on recent or upcoming development, please reach out! Our staff use local Planning Commission meeting minutes as our primary source for information, but we recognize that those meeting minutes may be incomplete. We also monitor local news, cross-check the data we generate with other sources, and look for primary source data like construction documents.
