Project Spotlight: Town of Burke Cemetery Maps

Did you know CARPC’s mapping expertise even extends to cemeteries?

CARPC recently developed interactive mapping applications for the Town of Burke’s Hoepker Road Cemetery and School Cemetery in preparation for its annexation by the Cities of Madison and Sun Prairie and the Village of DeForest in 2036. These maps provide users with detailed headstone information, including photographs, key dates, and links to FindAGrave.org pages when available.

To bring this project to life, CARPC staff:

• Surveyed every headstone in the Town’s two cemeteries using precision locational equipment from UW-Madison’s Department of Planning and Landscape Architecture.
• Photographed each headstone and carefully documented details such as names, birth dates, and death dates.
• Digitized historical cemetery maps and integrated burial and sales records into user-friendly web applications.

These mapping tools not only add pinpoint locational accuracy to the Town’s historical records but also help identify and correct any incomplete or inaccurate information.
