Black Earth Creek Watershed Tour
Capital Area RPC staff, Steering Committee members, and the consultant team for the Black Earth Creek Watershed Green Infrastructure Planning project participated in a tour of the Black Earth Creek Watershed on Thursday, May 13th. It was a gorgeous spring day to get out in the watershed. Stops along the tour spanned from the eastern headwaters of the watershed downstream to the Village of Mazomanie. At each location participants shared their challenges and experiences due to flooding in the watershed, particularly the August 2018 flood event. Under-sized culverts, high groundwater levels, altered stream channels, stream obstructions, property damage, and erosion were some of the issues discussed. The information gathered will help us in our joint effort to identify specific projects and practices that provide a quantifiable level of flood protection to communities, water quality benefits to Black Earth Creek and its tributaries, and recreation, economic, and ecological benefits to the watershed as a whole.
