Director’s Note
Thanks to the grant, The pace is accelerating

The Housing and Urban Development Regional Planning Grant we received has brought new faces and much needed capabilities to the CARPC. The pace of planning work has now picked up, enabling six communities to begin Future Urban Development Area (FUDA) planning. Preliminary discussions have begun with other Dane County communities interested in benefiting from grant resources by starting their own FUDA planning. We look forward to a busy few years as we prepare for the update of the Dane County Land Use and Transportation Plan,  work on which will begin after the grant projects and the technical updates of regional plans establish the needed foundation for this comprehensive effort.

Collaborative planning efforts enable effective, efficient, and informed choices by communities within their regions. The Grant includes several projects that are generating regional models to help analyze market conditions, fiscal impacts, and natural resources susceptibilities. These tools, resources, and technical expertise are available to local communities through CARPC to provide evidence-based choices for current and future planning efforts.

At a time when fiscal difficulties dominate the news and dictate many of our personal and community decisions, regional planning plays a critical role in setting the stage for multi-jurisdictional collaboration and sharing of resources for more cost effective delivery of services. Evidence-based information-sharing leads to better dialogue, and finding common ground to replace former cross-boundary conflicts.

By collaboratively planning today, we avoid the possibility of facing worse difficulties and challenges 10 and 20 years down the road.
Kamran Mesbah, CARPC Deputy Director
